On behalf of the Sierra Club family, we are all very saddened by the loss of our friend, colleague, and activist, Andrew Chisholm, and extend our condolences to his family and friends.

The world would be a better place with more people like Andrew Chisholm out there.

Everyone loves a good story. Stories create social meaning and satisfy our imaginations. According to research compiled in George Marshall’s book Don’t Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change, we need to tell more stories to inspire people to climate action. Facts and data influence our analytical minds, but our emotional minds make the decisions. Stories motivate our emotional minds.

In my new book, The Big Swim, climate facts weave through wild adventure of many kinds. Marshall’s book didn’t exist when I wrote it, but my writing group led me to the same place: tell stories full of emotional meaning.

Here are some suggestions based on Marshall’s book and my experience that could help you...

Greetings from Victoria where our Protect the Pollinators Tour gets underway tonight.

I want to talk about Bill C-51, the anti-terror bill, and how it might impact Canadian environmentalists. Before I do, I want to take a moment and talk about Andrew Chisholm, who passed away over the weekend. He was the first person I ever spoke to at Sierra Club back in 1996. He took the time to talk to me about how the federal government was changing the environmental assessment laws in the middle of the night so it could sell CANDU reactors to China.
