That those most opposed to climate action are also those who want Canada to surrender into becoming the 51st U.S. State is unsurprising. U.S. conquest has usually happened as a result of the influence of oil and gas corporations – corporations that have thrown their support behind Trump and spread the misinformation that has let him go this far. The interests of Canadian national sovereignty and those of oil and gas corporations are increasingly going in separate ways. Proposed LNG (gas) projects would require huge subsidies to function and are a massive risk to taxpayers as demand worldwide is predicted to slow.
For every additional dollar of inflation you pay in Canada, 25 cents of that has gone to oil and gas and mining extraction profits. Now we are paying with fear for the future also.
Oil and gas dependency for energy, transport, and employment exposes us to control by hostile leaders like Trump. Albertans are fighting foreign coal corporations that want to pollute their water and that undermine local democracy. ‘Canada-based’ oil and gas corporations, which falsely claim to be patriotic, are refusing to do their part to fight back against U.S. tariffs by demanding they be exempt from any counter tariffs or response measures – unlike other sectors.
We must rapidly shift to a community-led renewable economy to secure our independence and provide real options for energy workers in Alberta and elsewhere. More resources below.
Only YOU standing up against that hate & climate denial can make things better. BELOW is our two part podcast on how to resist U.S. annexation and stand up to U.S. tariff threats.
Part 1 (below):
Part 2 (Below): Following the announcement that the Prime Minister was resigning on Monday January 6th, 2025, Trump doubled down on the idea of annexation citing the resignation as a win for annexation (and on that same day oil and gas companies saw stock rises).
Part Two is a follow-up Q&A on questions we have received from you since Part 1, like what would the many forms of annexation look like, how has the response from media been, how would annexation impact our influence on the U.S.’s politics, and more on why we should take the threat of annexation seriously. There are also more podcasts and resources on related subjects at the end of this article. Send us more of your questions on this or other issues at info@sierraclub.ca

It is important to resist annexation. Keep in mind the main reason Trump didn’t do as many of the extreme things he wanted to do last time was because of the presence of moderates around him, that isn’t the case this time.
Acting on corporate pollution is reflective of a value, one that can define us as world leaders who care about our present and future – one that sets us apart from the coming U.S. administration. Only by breaking Canadian values like environmental protection, inclusivity, and affordable healthcare in us can a U.S. administration truly conquer us. And that’s why we need to hold to those values now more than ever – we need them to endure.
