Digging Into Spring!
This past weekend we had a great time planting trees and shrubs in an area of Erindale Park in Mississauga as a part of our Natural Capital Program. Following a quick planting demonstration by Credit Valley Conservation, around 50 enthusiastic participants worked for over three hours (in glorious sunny weather) to get 250 plants in the ground.
After most of the trees were in the ground our friends at ACER (Association for Canadian Educational Resources) trained some of our interested volunteers how to tag, record and measure tree growth through a hands-on tree-measuring demonstration. Information was collected for 25 trees and it will be used as a part of ACER’s long-term climate change forest monitoring program called “Measuring Our Resources”. The selected trees were marked and will be revisited and monitored over time by passionate and interested volunteers trained at events like this one.
We were also surprised by a volunteer group from RBC who generously presented us with a $1000 cheque for us to continue offering these events!
Thank you to all who came out and made this a successful day and thank you to TD Friends of the Environment and Community Foundation Mississauga Grants for providing funding support.
