Time to Amp Up East-West Clean Energy Grid

Media Release: For immediate release March 6, 2025

(Ki’jupuk) Improving the electricity grid between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is good news to Clean Energy Now (CNA), an alliance that has worked to have this happen for over a decade.

Yesterday, federal, provincial and Indigenous government leaders announced investment in doubling the capacity to transfer electricity between the two eastern Canadian provinces. That’s an important step for reaching CNA’s goal to get Nova Scotia off of coal and expand Maritime wind and other renewables.

“It’s great to finally get this project off the ground,” said Gretchen Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada. “East-west interconnectivity is key to driving down pollution and driving up investments in community owned renewables and publicly owned offshore wind. We challenge governments to double down on the capacity announced yesterday so we can truly seize the potential of east coast energy and create greater energy security and jobs in Canada. With offshore wind and community based power potential in Eastern Canada the time is now to amp up east-west electron pipeline.”

“Ensuring Clean Energy Now is a sensible choice for affordability, security and climate change,” said Neal Livingston, Margaree Environmental Association. “Governments need to act more quickly to shut down coal-fired generating plants, increase renewables, and forget about false solutions like the Energy East pipeline or expanding Muskrat Falls.”

Clean Energy Now is an alliance of Ecology Action Centre, Margaree Environmental Association and Sierra Club Canada formed in 2011 to push for improvements in the electricity grid between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.
