During the federal election campaign, the Sierra Club Canada Foundation invited candidates from all the major federal parties in Ottawa to check out the air quality in their ridings and a few took the time to visit with us. We believe that air quality is something most people in the city should know about and understand, and so should our new local MPs.

Contemptuously, in the recent federal election there was an obscene amount of all party support to one of the most ecocidal threats to our planet. That threatened area is the Hudson Bay Lowlands, whose vast peat bogs perform a role more vital than ever before. It serves as a refrigerator for our planet which is under attack by anthropogenic climate change. These lowlands are the largest contiguous tract remaining of temperate wetlands on our sacred Mother Earth.

On September 17, 2021, the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) dismissed a zoning appeal by the Ontario Sierra Club Executive Committee Member, John Bacher. The Sierra Club Canada Foundation had separately sought standing as a participant in the case. 

De Beers is asking the Ontario government for permission to have a dump of 97,000 cubic meters of waste. This has sparked suspicions in Attawapiskat as this level is just below the 100,000 threshold for a full review under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act.

It is a well known fact that plastic pollution is ending up in the natural environment. From the depths of the ocean, to the North Pole, plastics and microplastics are being found in animals, water and in the food that we eat.
