Can you believe it's already February? Whether you’ve been spending time outdoors doing winter activities or keeping warm inside, I hope your start to 2022 has been enjoyable.

We are excited to kick off another year at Sierra Club Ontario. We have a lot of plans in store for the year and are excited to share them with you.

Ending Plastic Pollution — A Call to Action

Each year, more than 4 million tonnes of plastic is produced in Canada, but less than 10% of it actually gets recycled. About 8,000 tonnes of plastic waste ends up in landfills, incinerators or the natural environment EVERY SINGLE DAY. This is unacceptable.

We are among 52 groups calling on the Canadian government to do more, and faster, to tackle plastic pollution.

Sierra Club Ontario Members Oppose Proposed Urban Expansions in Niagara

Proposals have been put forward to urbanize vast swaths of land via the Niagara Region’s new Official Plan. These planned urban expansions threaten Canada’s most biologically diverse Carolinian zone. Watch Sierra Club Canada Foundation Members speak up against planned urban expansions.

Stopping Forest Extinction

Today, the axe-wielding madmen doing land use planning for Niagara are casting doom on Canada’s most biologically diverse Carolinian zone. What is most egregious are the five urban expansions planned for the municipalities of West Lincoln, Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. They would be urbanizing 1,818.7 acres (736 hectares) of land now restricted for rural purposes, including habitats for many endangered and declining species.

Two Years is Too Long — We Need a Plastic Ban Now

Canada’s Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announced a ban on some select plastic items just before the new year.

Now we have learned that, given the way these regulations are written, it will actually take another two years before even this limited ban has any real impact. This limited ban also doesn’t stop companies from exporting these products internationally and continuing to create unnecessary and harmful pollution — not exactly neighbourly.
