Hello from Sierra Club Ontario!

It's finally starting to feel like Spring! As the weather starts to warm up and the colours come back, I hope you find some time to spend outdoors. 

It's been a busy first quarter and we are excited to share what we've been working on with you! From combating air pollution, to protecting our forests and water, we are working hard to preserve Ontario's landscape and future. 

As we enter Earth Month, I'm reminded now more than ever just how important our environment is. Mother Earth is precious and we need as many people as possible caring about and protecting the environment.

Take a Deep Breath…

Blackburn Hamlet is a small community in the east end of Ottawa. Recently, a resident flagged that he had noticed an increase in dust in the air, which through a series of events led me to start volunteering with Sierra Club’s BreatheEasy project.

Struggle Continues To Protect World's Purest Water In Simcoe

On World Water Day 2022, one of our members, Native Elder Danny Beaton, a Turtle Clan Mohawk, spoke out at the Queen's Park rally.  

He said “The water is the blood of our Sacred Mother Earth, all tribes and nations across Canada and North America are fighting for Mother Earth too."

Ontario Forests Under Constant Threat 
Two Court Battles Seek to Defend Southern Ontario’s Threatened Forests

The Freele Tract is now under assault, as it is being proposed by Simcoe County as the site for a Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Plant. Thundering Waters is vulnerable to a proposed urban development. Both forests contain rare and declining bird species that require large tracts of intact forests.

Niagara Carolinian Bulldozer Massacre

Over the past week and a half, there has been a Carolinian tree massacre by bulldozer underway in Niagara.

It was estimated that 1,375 trees would likely be removed for the Riverfront development. While it called for 554 trees to be retained, it is impossible to determine if this was achieved. 

The trees identified in the Colville report were all native species in good health.

The Niagara region's new Official Plan threatens to promote urban sprawl, degrading key habitats for endangered species and impacting the region's thriving agricultural community.

Dr. John Bacher recently spoke to the region's Planning and Economic Development Committee to stress three key points.

Our BreatheEasy campaign recently hosted a webinar with Health Canada's Dr. Errol Thomson to learn about the effects of air pollution on our health.

Dr. Thomson provided a brief overview of ongoing research efforts into the health effects of air pollution, including the widespread nature of effects, how pollutant composition matters, and factors that contribute to vulnerability.

Ontario Plan for Burning Garbage is a Hot Mess

The Ontario government is proposing a plan to implement changes to the Environmental Assessment Act. These changes would not only make it easier for companies to launch experimental technologies that claim to recover fuel and/or chemicals from waste, but they would also remove important public oversight from these controversial projects.
