Right now lobbyists operating on behalf of Enbridge are in the United States actively endangering one fifth of the world’s fresh water. They are fighting to keep the aging Line 5 oil pipeline open even as it threatens the ecosystems so many of us rely on, even while it puts the great lakes and communities at risk. This is after Indigenous communities and Americans in Michigan succeeded in getting Governor Gretchen Whitmer to order the shut down of Line 5. And here’s the thing, those Enbridge lobbyists are telling politicians south of the border that they represent YOU. They are saying that as Canadians we want Line 5 to keep operating. Enbridge is operating Line 5 against the popular will of Americans, against the wishes of Indigenous peoples, and they are saying that this is something you want. That is why we are collaborating with our friends at Sierra Club US, Sierra Club Michigan, and Sierra Club Illinois to push back and make it clear that these oil lobbyists do not represent us. Along with Kathleen Brosemer (Azhede-kwe), the environmental director for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and Tessine Murji, conservation organizer with the Illinois Sierra Club, we worked to publish a recent op-ed in the National Observer about Line 5 and Enbridge’s actions. Now, we want your help! We’re calling for volunteers here in Canada who are willing to help us run events, make calls, and organize alongside those working to shut down Line 5 in the United States. To offer to volunteer just send an email saying you would like to help to ConorC@SierraClub.ca |
