Hello from Sierra Club Ontario! I hope you have been doing well and enjoying the Autumn weather. 

With only a couple of months left of 2022, we have been reflecting on everything we've accomplished together this year. Again, we want to thank you for your continued support. As we begin to look forward to 2023, we are excited to continue the work and have more opportunities to connect! 

In the meantime, we have a lot of exciting things to share!
 
Connecting with Each Other & Nature

On October 1, we kicked off the month with a tree planting at Hickory Wood Park in Brampton in collaboration with Credit Valley Conservation and Sheridan College - Mission Zero. 

We want to thank all of the volunteers for coming out and joining us in planting all 185 native trees and shrubs! We couldn't have done it without you — thank you!

Who gets to Breathe Easy?

Megan Cormier, one of our key Breathe Easy volunteers, is currently running a blog series  on the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Specifically highlighting environmental justice concerns and the need for its further strengthening. Two blogs have been published and the next will be posted in November — stay tuned!
Breathing Easy: A privilege not granted to all

In February 2022, Bill S-5 was introduced in the Senate with the goal of amending and strengthening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. Among other things, the bill aims to amend the protection provided for vulnerable populations and establish a right to a healthy environment.

The Fight to Breathe Easy: Is Bill S-5 the Answer?

Health Canada estimates that there are 15,300 premature deaths, 2.7 million asthma symptom days, and 35 million acute respiratory symptom days linked to air pollution each year. Environmental burdens in Canada are not distributed equally amongst its residents, which disproportionately fall on the most vulnerable members of society.

Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25
 

Do you know any young environmental leaders?! The Starfish Canada recently opened their call for nominations for their annual Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 program, which celebrates and rewards young leaders creating positive change in their communities by sharing their story through their national platform. Previous winners have come from all across the country and have been as young as 8!

Winners get: 

  • Job and mentorship opportunities
  • Funding opportunities for their ideas and/or projects
