2) Ask Premier Wynne to vote “NO” on water diversion that contradicts Great Lakes Compact
Our friends at Freshwater Future have created a webpage to help you quickly and easily submit your public comment before the deadline of March 14. (Link here too: http://act.freshwaterfuture.org/page/speakout/waukesha)
Background
If approved by the Great Lakes governors, the community of Waukesha, Wisconsin will be the first allowed to divert Great Lakes water under the Great Lakes Compact and Agreement -- which bans diversions of Great Lakes water with limited exceptions. Waukesha is hoping to be one of those exceptions. It took years of careful negotiation between Ontario and Quebec with the eight Great Lakes states to develop these protections.
The problem with this proposal is that it doesn’t meet the strict standards set to be an allowable “exception” to the ban on diversions. If we don’t deny this first weak proposal and keep these standards high, the floodgates could be opened to all sorts of diversion proposals we fought for years to protect our Great Lakes from.
Please act now! Comments will only be accepted until Monday March 14, 2016.
